Supportive Services offered by Catholic Community Services' Volunteer Services
Helps low-income elders and adults with chronic illnesses or disabilities remain independent in their homes. Matches volunteers to provide companionship, light housework, and other simple chores. Assists with everyday household chores such as vacuuming, laundry, grocery shopping and yard work. Drives and carpools seniors and adults with disabilities to doctor’s appointments, the grocery store, the pharmacy, and other important locations. Drivers are able to wait until appointment is over for return trip. Phone Buddies provide older adults with support through a weekly phone call. Services are provided based on volunteer availability and calls are returned in the order in which they are received. All volunteers are carefully screened with three references and a Washington State Patrol background check. Due to the high number of requests and limited number of volunteers, may be unable to offer services to all callers.

Application process
Eligibility screening and intake are conducted over the main intake line. For transportation requests, call 7-10 days, minimum, in advance of service date. Volunteer availability and schedule: The length of time before a volunteer is placed can vary greatly depending on availability of volunteers, geographic location, and type of chore request. VS volunteers typically provide help once a week or twice a month for a few hours each time. The program makes every effort to place the right volunteer with each request to meet needs within the scope of the program. Interpretation can be set up in advance
Eligibility
Low-income seniors, ages 60 and older, and low-income adults with disabilities, ages 18 and older. Everyone living in the household must meet all eligibility criteria. Does not have strict financial criteria but does use the Federal Poverty Level as a guideline to determine eligibility. Serves as a safety net for those who do not qualify for DSHS chore services (COPES) and cannot afford to pay for private chore services themselves. Considers external factors such as medical expenses to determine eligibility. DSHS approval or Medicaid are not required. Services provided based on volunteer availability. Due to limitations, there is typically an extensive waitlist. Cannot guarantee immediate or quick placement with a volunteer.

Volunteer Services is “safety net” for older adults and adults living with disabilities who are unable to afford chore help or are ineligible for state/paid chore services. All recipients live on a limited income, have chronic health conditions or difficulty with mobility, and most live alone. Volunteers are matched to opportunities based on their personalities, neighborhood, and preferences, and provide training and ongoing support.
