Telephone Support offered by 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline

Provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. The Lifeline is comprised of a national network of over 200 local crisis centers, combining custom local care and resources with national standards and best practices. Veterans can call the hotline and press 1 to reach the Veterans Hotline and speak confidentially with a counselor through a program developed in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs. American Indians and Alaska Natives can text NATIVE to 741741 to connect with someone at the Native and Strong Helpline.

Application process

Call 988 to be routed to the nearest crisis center in the network.   A toll free number is also available. Veterans can press 1 to talk to someone on a designated veterans hotline.   Text NATIVE to 741741 to reach the Native and Strong Helpline.

Operates a 24-hour, toll-free, confidential suicide prevention hotline available to anyone in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. Each call is routed to the nearest crisis center in a national network of more than 200 crisis centers. The Lifeline’s national network of local crisis centers provide emotional support and referrals to local resources. Veterans can call the hotline and press 1 to reach a trained counselor through a program developed in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Also offers a chat and text service to listen and support anyone who is depressed, despairing, going through a hard time, or just needs to talk, including people who are thinking about suicide.
