GoodRoots Northwest

Offers an innovative organization that explores the entire food system to solve access barriers, advocate for food justice, promote health equity, and contribute to the region's agriculture-economic development. We serve over 200,000 individuals annually in a rural east Pierce County food desert. Our distribution is technology and customer-focused, and organizational decisions are driven by the customer experience surrounding access, dignity, equity, and inclusion. Our programs include The Market, Market Fresh Lockers, Healthy Youth, and Farm to Fork. The Market: We call our food pantry program "The Market" because it looks like a metropolitan market. It is located on a farm in rural unincorporated Pierce County and is the epicenter of the food desert we serve. The program is a choice model offering quality nutrition and locally produced fresh foods. Market Fresh Lockers: Our Market Fresh Lockers are a revolutionary approach to food access. These high-impact, low-footprint refrigerated smart lockers are efficient, safe, and reliable ways to address food insecurity. Families that cannot come to the Market during business hours utilize our lockers at their convenience. Technology bridges gaps in disparity. This is a rural distribution network with 6 locations launching by the end of 2023 and up to 6 more locations in 2024. Healthy Youth: This program delivers kid-friendly food bags to at-risk students weekly. We prioritize health and nutrition so students can return to school nourished and ready to learn. Farm to Fork: We place farmers at the head of the table in the fight against hunger through our partnerships. By sourcing locally produced goods, we support local businesses while putting half our operating budget back into the local economy. We aim to create a national model that defines a more equitable and abundant food system and ensures equal access to food resources and opportunity.
