Eligibility

No income or age restrictions but focuses on serving taxpayers who are over 50 and have low to moderate income. AARP membership is not required. Can't prepare returns with: - Self-employment if there are employees, losses, expenses that exceed $50,000, depreciation, business use of home, 1099 filing requirements or other complicating factors - Hobby income or other activities not for profit - Complicated capital gains/losses, such as futures or options - Complicated Schedule K-1 - Rental income, except land-only rentals or rentals of personal residence less than 15 days - Royalty income with expenses if not from self-employment - Tax on a Child’s Investment and Other Unearned Income - Farm income or expenses - Moving expenses - Alternative Minimum Tax, Additional Medicare Tax, or Net Investment Income Tax - Foreign financial asset reporting requirements - Transactions with digital assets

Application process

Call for an appointment. Taxpayers should plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to their appointment time to complete the Intake/Interview questionnaire. Initial appointment will include completing questionnaire, meeting with tax counselor, and scanning of all tax documents. Some sites additionally offer: - Drop Off Service: Leave documents at the site; return is prepared remotely. Pick up and file during a second visit. - No Site Visit Required (Internet Access Required): Upload documents online; volunteers work with you remotely to prepare and file your return electronically. - Online Coaching: Prepare your own return with remote support from a volunteer. - Facilitated Self-Assistance: Schedule a site appointment to complete and file your own return with volunteer coaching help.

Provides electronic income tax preparation assistance for earned income. Taxes are prepared by volunteers certified by the Internal Revenue Service. To file taxes on a married filing joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. Types of Earned Income: - Wages, salary or tips where federal income taxes are withheld on Form W-2, box 1 - Income from a job where your employer didn’t withhold tax (such as gig economy work) including: Driving a car for booked rides or deliveries; Running errands or doing tasks; Selling goods online; Providing creative or professional services; Providing other temporary, on-demand or freelance work - Money made from self-employment, including operation of a business or farm; ministers or members of a religious order; statutory employees with income - Benefits from a union strike - Certain disability benefits before reaching minimum retirement age - Nontaxable Combat Pay (Form W-2, box 12 with code Q) Earned income does not include: - Pay for work as an inmate in a penal institution - Interest and dividends - Pensions or annuities - Social Security - Unemployment benefits - Alimony - Child support
