Operates a helpline for veterans where they can speak with a smoking cessation counselor to receive:
  • Help developing a quit plan
  • Individualized counseling
  • Strategies to prevent relapse
  • Follow-up calls to help you stay quit
Counselor may ask specific questions about tobacco use, quitting history and motivations to quit to help create a quit plan. Any information provided to the counselor during the call is kept private.   Counselors are unable to provide smoking cessation medications. Callers should talk to their VA health care provider about using medication, and let them know they are using the Quit VET helpline.   Veterans may be able to get a prescription for nicotine gum, patch, or lozenge, or for bupropion, another medication for smoking cessation available through the VA.
