Mental Health Court offered by King County District Court's Regional Court in Seattle

Provides mentally ill defendants with access to public mental health treatment services to promote reduced recidivism and improve community safety.   A court clinician from the treatment community will be present at all hearings and will be responsible for developing an initial treatment plan and linking the defendant to appropriate services.   Defendants receive court-ordered treatment instead of standard sentencing. Participation in the King County program is voluntary, as defendants may be asked to waive their rights to a trial on the merits of the case.   The Mental Health Court reserves the right not to accept cases into its jurisdiction

Accepts referrals from: - The Judge - Defense Attorneys and Defense Social Workers - Prosecutors and Victim Advocate - Peer Specialists - Probation Mental Health Specialists - Court Clinicians - Program Manager   - The Court Monitor screens the defendant for appropriateness for MHC. Call for dates and times court service is offered.

Eligibility

The charge(s) are being prosecuted by King County or a municipality within King County; The defendant has been diagnosed with a major mental illness (typically a severe and persistent Axis I disorder); Appropriate services are available in the community and the defendant is amendable to treatment and supervision; and The defendant is agreeable to the conditions of Regional Mental Health Court, including treatment, supervision and monitoring.
