Student Liaison offered at Kennewick School District

Supports children and youth experiencing homelessness by helping them remain connected to their education and school community. Under the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, eligible students have the right to attend their school of origin, when feasible, or enroll immediately in their neighborhood school without delays due to missing enrollment documents. The program assists families and unaccompanied youth by arranging transportation to their school of origin, helping with school enrollment, and connecting them with community resources, including health care, dental care, mental health services, food, clothing, and other essential supports. A student or family may qualify if they lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes families who are temporarily living with others due to the loss of housing or financial hardship, staying in shelters or transitional housing, living in motels or campgrounds because they have no other adequate housing, or residing in places not intended for human habitation, such as vehicles, parks, or abandoned buildings. The Students in Transition program helps ensure that housing instability does not prevent students from accessing a stable, supportive education and the resources they need to succeed.
