The office also provides a hotline for people both in the US and abroad to call if they have family abroad and a disaster has occurred. Individuals who have questions related to the death or arrest/detention of a US citizen abroad may call the hotline. The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a travel registration service for US citizens and nationals who are traveling to, or living in, another country. Once enrolled, participants can receive information about safety conditions in the destination country, help the nearest embassy contact the traveler in an emergency (natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency), and help family and friends contact the traveler in case of emergency.
