KIAC's Immigration Legal Services program provides direct representation and assistance as our capacity allows with:

KIAC is a Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) recognized agency that provides high quality, low- or no-cost immigration legal services through a team of two staff attorneys and 10+ DOJ Accredited Representative volunteers.

Immigration Legal Services offered at Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center (KIAC)

Provide help with naturalization, green cards, DACA, U Visa, VAWA, DAPA, citizenship test preparation, and other immigration legal services. ITIN and tax assistance provided to immigrants.

Programs, which may be available via the Internet, that help people who have lived in the U.S. the requisite period of time prepare for the examination they must pass to become citizens. Practice questions may be available.

Citizenship Test Preparation

Tax processing numbers issued in the United States by the Internal Revenue Service to certain nonresident and resident aliens, their spouses, and dependents who are unable to get a Social Security Number (SSN). Applicants must complete and submit a Form W-7 with required documentation substantiating foreign/alien status and the individual's true identity. Applicants may either mail the documentation, along with the Form W-7, to the closest IRS Service Center, present it at an IRS walk-in office, or process the application through an Acceptance Agent authorized by the IRS. Applicants not currently in the U.S. can apply from abroad.

Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers

Programs that provide a wide variety of legal and supportive services (which may include information, counseling, application completion and filing assistance and/or legal representation, when required) for immigrants, nonimmigrant visa applicants, asylum seekers and lawful permanent residents who are seeking naturalization. Issues may include procedures for obtaining student, visitor and employment-based visas; family immigration; asylee status; lawful permanent residence status; and/or citizenship.

Comprehensive Immigration/Naturalization Services

Programs that assist in filing applications by lawful permanent residents who have been in that status for at least five years (or three years if married to a U.S. citizen), who meet other eligibility requirements and who wish to become naturalized U.S. citizens. Applicants must pass a citizenship examination to determine whether they can speak and read English and have a knowledge of the fundamentals of American government, history and the Constitution; and must take an oath of allegiance to the United States.

Naturalization Support/Legal Services

Programs outside the AARP and VITA networks that provide tax preparation services for people who meet income and/or other eligibility criteria. The programs are staffed by agency personnel or trained volunteers and may be available during tax season or throughout the year. Services may include assistance in completing federal and state income tax returns, assistance with claiming federal and state EITC and other tax benefits available to low-income taxpayers, correction of prior year returns and resolution of problems with the IRS, and/or access to volunteers who can provide tax advice, planning and counseling.

Privately Operated Tax Assistance Programs

Programs that assist in filing applications for discretionary relief in situations where the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (BICE) can decide not to prosecute or remove (deport) a particular alien based on a recommendation of the District Director and Regional Commissioner. Factors in the recommendation and decision include but are not limited to immigration status, immigration history, length of residence in the U.S., criminal history, humanitarian concerns, the ultimate likelihood of removal, community attention and resources available in BICE. Also included are programs that accept applications from qualifying individuals who came to the United States as children and are seeking to defer removal or other enforcement actions under the provisions of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.

Deferred Action on Alien Removal

Programs that accept and make administrative decisions regarding immigration petitions and naturalization applications submitted by immigrants, nonimmigrant visa applicants, asylum seekers and lawful permanent residents who are seeking naturalization.

Immigration/Naturalization Adjudication Services

Provides free tax preparation, Working Families Tax Credit application help and assistance with Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) applications and renewals.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance offered at PIM Savvy in Renton

Provides free tax preparation, Working Families Tax Credit application help and assistance with Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) applications and renewals. Virtual and in-person appointments available. Call or visit website to sign up. Appointments required.

Programs that provide Internet sites where people can file individual, business or other tax return information electronically using specific software products. Users answer questions about their income, withholding, dependents, deductions and other details and the software completes the calculations. The returns may be filed electronically with the appropriate federal and state tax agencies or printed for mailing through the postal system.

Online Tax Preparation/E-Filing Sites

The community centers and other sites where older adults and low income individuals and families can obtain assistance from a trained VITA volunteer in completing their tax return forms.
