Responsible for environmental health control, septic system, solid waste management, and food safety. Also provides copies of birth and death certificates. Assists with information and referrals to health care, birth control, STD/HIV/AIDS programs, and immunization clinics.

Accepts and, where possible, attempt to resolve complaints regarding the licensing, cleanliness, truth in menu, unethical or improper conduct of personnel or other inappropriate business practices of eating establishments. Provides restaurant inspection reports available by the Yakima Health District upon request. Those interested in a record, there are three ways to obtain it. 1) Visit the Environmental Help Desk: if you want printed information, you will be required to fill out the Release of Public Records form for a small charge per copy. If you want to receive verbal information or view the computer system, there is no charge. 2) Download the Release of Public Records form from the website, fax it to (509) 575-7894, records will be sent by fax. 3) Call the Help Desk and receive verbal information over the phone.

Provides a question and answer line for information regarding mold, drinking water, solid waste, sewage, vectors, food sanitation, chemical and physical hazards, water recreation, and summer camps. In addition, the Yakima Health District has made an investment to provide the digital health app myStrength to residents/workers in Yakima County for additional mental health resources and support. The app myStrength provides resources to improve mental health and overall well-being. MyStrength offers personalized services to help overcome depression and anxiety, and is supported by tools, weekly exercises, and daily inspiration in a safe and confidential environment. Focuses towards promoting and protecting the health and well-being of the community by preventing, to the extent possible, the potential for food-borne illnesses and keeping the community aware of recalls of suspected food sources. Environmental Health is a branch of public health that focuses on prevention of disease in a community through direct intervention. This is done through inspections and enforcement of various state and local laws, all of which are designed to promote a healthier community. Regulates all retail food service establishments in the city of Tacoma and Pierce County. Provides education and epidemiologic surveillance, investigates consumer concerns and food borne illness reports. Regulates public and private schools, public swimming pools, and spas.

Issues permits and licenses for food establishments, on site septic systems, wells and water systems, public pools and spas, public camps, parks, etc. Investigates environmental health complaints.

Protects the public from environmental hazards through food service inspections and food worker training, and food borne illness investigations. Regulates the sewage system, shellfish safety, water quality, and waste disposal. Provides information about home health hazards and wildfire smoke.

Environmental Health focuses on how the environment affects the health of the community and works to minimize the public's exposure to environmental hazards.  Services include: food borne illness reporting and investigating, harmful chemicals, biological agents, rabies questions, food safety, restaurant inspections, drinking water samples/testing, shellfish/biotoxin monitoring, septic permitting and inspections, water/recreation/pools testing.

Provides retail food service permits and inspection; temporary food service permits; surveillance over recreation shellfish and beach water quality; permits and inspections of solid waste and hazardous waste handling; consultation to private and public water supplies; insect and animal borne diseases; school, youth camp and permits. Permits and inspections of onsite septic systems.

Conducts inspections, investigates complaints (including vector complaints), issues permits, and enforces regulations for retail food service establishments, temporary events, schools, camps, parks, and water recreation facilities (pools/spas).  Conducts PSP (red tide) sampling.  Administers food handler card classes and testing.

Provides inspection and licensing of restaurants and other establishments serving food to the public. Plan, review, and approve small public water systems. Bacteriological water sample testing. Assistance with problems on private wells and community systems. License water system designers. Investigate all cases of environmentally spread communicable disease. Inspect public and semi-private swimming pools, hot tubs, and beaches. Inspect schools. License and inspect disposal sites. Monitor ground water and surface waters.  Investigate animal bites for rabies control. Offer advice for eradication of rodents and insects. Investigate Lyme disease and Hantavirus.      

Conducts routine inspections at all food services establishments-restaurants, schools, grocery stores, convenience stores, wineries, concession stands, mobile units as well as temporary events to ensure compliances to WAC 246.215. Also provides Food Worker Card classes.

Inspects public facilities such as schools and water recreation facilities (pools and spas). Plans, reviews and inspects certain commercial facilities (massage parlors, tattoo parlors and public bathhouses). Provides routine inspection of food service establishments such as restaurants, grocery stores, taverns and ice cream vendors. Responds to citizens' complaints and has enforcement authority. Also inspects and certifies red meats, fish and poultry. Investigates consumer fraud through misrepresentation in product advertising, improper dating or pricing, etc.

Offers plan review of new or remodeling food service establishments; licensing and inspection of food service establishments; investigation of illness complaints related to food; and training and issuing of food worker cards.
