Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to protect homes, businesses and property from the threat of fire.  Fire prevention programs provide information about faulty wiring and other electrical hazards, kitchen fires, smoking risks, child-related fire safety, flammable materials storage, brush clearance, fire retardant building materials and ground cover, techniques for fighting a fire until the fire agency arrives (first aid firefighting) and other similar topics. Included are programs that inspect the homes of individual citizens and give them a report which recommends ways to protect their property as well as those that deal with fire safety in a more general way.

Fire Prevention Information

Programs that are responsible for the inspection of buildings, hillside property and industrial plants to ensure compliance with fire codes in order to eliminate or reduce potential fire hazards. Inspectors ensure that fire alarms and extinguishers are properly installed and in working order; that there are an adequate number of exit ways and exit doors that are appropriately signed, illuminated, unobstructed and operable from inside the building; that the maximum room capacity has been posted, when required, and has not been exceeded; and that hazardous materials or devices on the premises are appropriately stored and/or utilized. Fire safety inspections are conducted in factories, schools, hotels, hospitals, churches, halls, theaters, businesses and all other places in which people work, live or congregate.

Fire Safety Inspections

Programs that pay for or provide life jackets, life belts or life rings which are designed to save a person from drowning by buoying up the body in the water.

Life Preservers

Programs that offer classes which teach child care providers, babysitters, parents, grandparents, teachers and others who supervise children to recognize and care for cardiac and breathing emergencies common to infants and children, usually from birth to age 12. Participants are taught to prioritize care in an emergency involving more than one victim, protect themselves from disease transmission by taking precautions while giving care, clear an airway obstruction in a child who is choking, give rescue breathing and administer care in cardiac emergencies using CPR. Some classes also include basic first aid and/or the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) with infants and children.

Infant/Child CPR Instruction

Programs that pay for or provide smoke detection devices which can be installed in homes, apartments or commercial buildings and which sound an alarm when fire breaks out and smoke comes into contact with the device.

Smoke Alarms

Programs that provide opportunities for young people to learn the basic skills and emergency procedures that are required for the care of infants and small children. Some programs provide certificates for individuals who successfully complete the course.

Babysitting Instruction

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to ensure their safety while riding bicycles. Bicycle safety programs provide information about traffic laws as they apply to bicyclists and warnings regarding the types of violations and other riding behaviors that most frequently result in accidents. Also included are programs that address the specific needs of people who use their bicycles to commute to work, ride to school or get to other destinations.

Bicycle Safety Education

Programs that instruct the public in the appropriate techniques for prolonging the lives of victims of heart failure until emergency medical care can be provided. Included may be instruction in full CPR which combines rescue breaths with chest compressions (the best option in some emergencies, including those involving infants and children, drowning victims or people who collapse due to breathing problems) and/or hands only CPR which involves chest compressions only, no mouth to mouth contact. Hands only CPR is used in emergencies where someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest.

CPR Instruction

Programs that provide instruction that covers a range of basic paramedical techniques (such as controlling bleeding, preventing shock, rigging emergency splints/wraps for bone breaks/sprains) that can be used to provide basic emergency treatment for individuals who are sick or have been injured before professional medical attention is available. Also included is instruction in treating minor injuries such as insect bites, scratches, burns and splinters that normally do not require medical care.

General First Aid Instruction

Life jackets are available year-round for short-term loan (sizes from infant - XL adult). By appointment only, no drop-ins.

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to ensure their safety while engaging in recreation in, on or around the water.

Water Safety Education

The program provides a simple way for people to borrow a properly-sized life jacket for the day or weekend at no charge. Life jackets are available in infant through adult XXL sizes.
