Public Videophone for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing offered by Hearing, Speech & Deaf Center in Seattle

Offers public access to a videophone to connect with Video Relay Service (VRS) or Video Remote Interpreting (VRI). Offers videophone training by appointment.

Programs that pay for or provide access to TTY equipment (also known as text telephones, TDDs and telecommunication devices for the deaf), or other specialized telecommunications devices such as voice carry-over telephones, amplified telephones, telebraillers, voice-activated telephones, captioned telephone, sip-n-puff telephones or large visual displays for use at home or in the office by people who are deaf or hearing impaired, have speech disabilities or physical limitations, or need to communicate with a person with a hearing impairment or speech disability. Included are programs that pay for or loan such equipment to people with disabilities or organizations serving them, or which operate sites where such equipment is available for use by the public.

Specialized Telecommunications Equipment

Programs that allow people who are deaf or have a hearing impairment and feel more comfortable expressing themselves through American Sign Language (ASL) to conduct video relay calls with family, friends or business associates through a certified ASL interpreter via a broadband Internet connection and a computer equipped with a video camera. The video interpreter signs the telephone conversation with an ASL user and voices to a hearing person via a standard telephone allowing the participant to see expressions and gestures during the call.

Video Relay Services

Provides assistive devices and technology for patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) who have difficulty communicating with their families and caregivers.  
Loans assistive technology such as specialized communication devices and laptop computers that are outfitted for communication needs.

Augmentative Communications Program offered by ALS Association

Loans assistive devices and technology such as laptop computers for patients with ALS.

Programs that pay for or provide syringes, thermometers, glucose analyzers, urinalysis test systems, sphygmomanometers and other health care devices which have been modified for use by people who have physical or visual impairments.

Adapted Health Care Devices

Programs that enable individuals who have physical or sensory limitations to borrow the assistive technology products they require at no charge.  Loans may be long or short-term in nature and the devices are returned once the agreed-upon period of time has elapsed.

Assistive Technology Equipment Loan

Programs that pay for or provide hardware or software adaptations such as Braille embossers and translators, speech synthesizers, text-to-speech synthesizers, screen readers and screen enlargement programs or screen magnifiers which enable people who have visual disabilities to read the displays on their computers and information systems and/or use other forms of output.

Computer Display/Output Aids

Provides telephone and signaling devices for people who are deaf, deaf-blind, hard-of-hearing, late deafened and speech disabled. 
Devices include telecommunications equipment (TTYs, amplified telephones, telebraille, etc. ) and signaling alert devices.

Telecommunications Equipment Distribution offered by DSHS's Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

Provides telephone and signaling devices for people who are deaf, deaf-blind, hard-of-hearing, late deafened and speech disabled. Devices include telecommunications equipment (TTYs, amplified telephones, telebraille) and signaling alerts.

Programs that pay for or provide assistive devices which alert people who have hearing impairments to environmental signals such as smoke alarms, doorbells, security alarms or crying babies. Included are vibrotactile aids which utilize transmitters which are placed near the sound source(s) to be monitored and small receivers which are worn by the individual who has the hearing impairment; and visual alerts which utilize ordinary household lamps (or other similar pieces of equipment) in conjunction with transmitters and receivers. Transmitters are connected to the sound source and transmit to one or more receivers which flash when receiving signals.

Programs that pay for or provide equipment or other products which enhance the ability of people who are nonvocal or have speech impairments to communicate.

Speech Aids

Programs that allow people who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech impairments to communicate through a communications assistant with people who use a standard telephone or the Internet. The communications assistant relays TTY (text telephone or telecommunications device for deaf and hard of hearing individuals) to the telephone user and types that person's response back to the TTY user. Three options when using a telephone relay service are voice carry-over (VCO), hearing carry-over (HCO) and speech-to-speech (STS).  VCO allows a person with a hearing impairment to speak directly to the other party and then read the response typed by a communications assistant. HCO allows a person with a speech impairment to hear the other party and relay the TTY response back to the telephone user through the communications assistant. STS provides assistance for people with speech disabilities who have difficulty being understood on the phone. STS communications assistants are specially trained in understanding a variety of speech disorders, which enables them to repeat what the caller says in a manner that makes the caller’s words clear and understandable to the called party. The relay service allows individuals with communication disorders to communicate with all telephone users. Telecommunication relay services can be reached by dialing 711.

Telecommunication Relay Services

Programs that pay for or provide amplification equipment for people who have impaired but correctable hearing. Included are hearing aids that are placed in the canal, in the ear (ITE or intraural), or behind the ear (BTE); eyeglasses aids; body aids; and vibrotactile aids which vibrate to assist the wearer to recognize speech and increase environmental awareness.
