Specialty Inpatient Services offered at Harborview Medical Center

Offers inpatient services, including general medicine and surgery, the Northwest Regional Burn Center, Regional Epilepsy Center, UW Spine Center, UW Medicine Stroke Center, rehabilitation medicine, coronary, neurological surgery, and trauma intensive care units.

Programs that provide intensive rehabilitative services on a 24-hour basis for patients who are severely disabled as a result of injury or disease. Services include a thorough evaluation of the person's abilities and disabilities and the development and implementation of a rehabilitation plan which may incorporate physical, occupational, speech and/or other types of therapies; education about modifications in lifestyle which may be necessary including information about diet, exercise and stress reduction; guidance in using adaptive devices which maximize the person's functional abilities; and counseling for the person and/or significant others to facilitate a positive adjustment to the person's current condition. Inpatient rehabilitation services may be provided by general acute care hospitals or skilled nursing facilities.

Inpatient Rehabilitation

City or county-operated health care facilities that provide a full range of inpatient services on an ability-to-pay basis and target low-income and indigent residents of the community.

City/County Hospitals

Health care facilities that are licensed to operate 24 hours per day and offer diagnostic and treatment services as well as emergency and critical care services for people who have any of a variety of illnesses or injuries which require immediate, short-term intervention.

General Acute Care Hospitals

Programs that make lifesaving techniques and equipment available to patients with acutely life-threatening illnesses or injuries who require continuous observation and, in many cases, intensive therapeutic intervention by trained medical staff. Intensive care is provided in special units or distinct parts of health care facilities that are designed for this purpose.

Intensive Care

Programs that provide special facilities for people who have received second and third degree burns to exterior surfaces of the body or to the respiratory tract that were caused by fire or excessive heat, flash explosions, hot steam or water, chemicals, electricity or radioactive substances or heat. Burn centers utilize a variety of equipment including sterilized rooms which have specially purified air to prevent infection, special beds and mattresses, heat shields rather than blankets and hyperbaric oxygen chambers which use concentrated oxygen to speed healing and prevent infection.

Burn Centers

Health care facilities that are operated by the county or the state or which are under contract with the state to provide health care services for Medicaid patients. Included are facilities that are exempted from the contracting process but are authorized to accept Medicaid patients.

Medicaid Contract Hospitals

Separate units of long term care facilities including hospitals that focus on care of patients with a particular diagnosis such as Alzheimer's disease, dementia, head injuries or other specific disorders.
