Provides an opportunity for parents receiving TANF to gain work experience and improve job skills while getting paid. Participants must be referred by the DSHS.

Community Jobs Program offered at  Goodwill Industries of the Columbia, Inc

Programs operated by state agencies or local jurisdictions that offer employment training and supportive services (such as child care, transportation costs, ancillary expenses and personal counseling) for people who are receiving public assistance through the TANF program in an effort to help them become self-supporting. Private organizations, often under contract with a public agency, may be involved in both the provision of training and on-the-job work experience (including volunteering in nonprofit agencies). Public assistance recipients are required to participate in designated program activities a minimum number of hours per week in order to receive their monthly income support payment and supplemental payments for support services.

Welfare to Work Programs

Programs that offer workshops or other forms of training or support that help executive staff, managers, supervisors and line staff in nonprofit organizations, small businesses or other types of agencies or consultants who work with these organizations develop the skills they need to function more effectively in the workplace.

Professional Skills Development Support

Programs that place people in actual employment situations in order to give them an opportunity to demonstrate their competence and skills, gain practical experience in a field for which they have been trained and/or develop new skills that will be beneficial with respect to future employment opportunities. People are placed on a short-term basis and, if remuneration is involved, are paid by the sponsoring agency rather than by the employer or through a cost-sharing arrangement.

Work Experience

Programs that provide financial assistance to help individuals pay union dues, union initiation fees, special exam and licensing fees and other work-related fees in situations where the person is unable to make the payment without support.

Work Related Fee Payment Assistance

Programs that maintain listings of available employment opportunities and assign a staff member to help people who are searching for a position to choose and obtain the most suitable option.

Job Search/Placement

Programs that provide instruction for people who need to acquire the basic "soft skills" and tools that are required to successfully apply for and secure employment, and retain a position once they have been hired. These programs provide information and guidance regarding preparing a resume, writing job application letters, completing job application questionnaires, responding to job ads and taking employment tests; offer tips regarding appropriate dress, personal appearance and interview techniques; and address other similar topics.

Prejob Guidance

Assists with a wide range of employment support services for youth ages 18-24, including resume building, cover letter writing, guided job search, life skills, mock interviews, completing applications, supplies, clothing, and employment-related fuel assistance/monthly bus passes.

Employment Support offered at Rod's House

Programs that provide money or vouchers to purchase gasoline, most frequently for individuals who need their automobile for necessary local or out-of-town travel but cannot afford to run their vehicle without assistance, but occasionally for people driving through the local area who have become stranded.

Gas Money

Programs that pay for or provide new or secondhand uniforms or other working clothes. Also included are programs such as "Dress for Success" that provide interview suits and other professional attire for low income individuals (frequently women) who need this type of wardrobe to secure and/or retain gainful employment.

Work Clothing

One-stop centers that provide an array of employment and training services in a convenient, easily accessible location. Services may include job counseling, testing and assessment; resume preparation assistance, interview training and other prejob guidance services; job matching and referral; unemployment insurance and job registration; labor market and career information; information on financial aid for education and training; and referral for job training, transportation, child care, personal and financial counseling, health care and other human services resources in the community.

Comprehensive Job Assistance Centers

Assists with career development, resume assistance, job search, job placement and retention services.  
Social service professionals help clients access community employment services when appropriate.  
Employment-related financial services may also be available, such as helping to obtain the following:

-  Bus tickets (to interview and to job after hire)
-  Haircut

Employment offered by King County Veterans Program in Tukwila

Offers job placement, counseling, referrals and job preparation support for veterans.

Programs that provide resume preparation assistance, career counseling, vocational assessment, job development, job training, job search, job placement and/or other services for unemployed veterans who need assistance re-entering the workforce. Programs for homeless veterans may also provide supportive services such as clothing; access to temporary, transitional and permanent housing; referrals for medical and substance abuse treatment; and transportation assistance. Veteran employment programs may be configured for recently separated veterans, homeless veterans, veterans with service-connected disabilities and other special populations or may be broadly available to veterans in general.
