Programs that specialize in providing therapeutic interventions that are based on the doctrine developed by Carl Rogers that psychotherapy consists of helping people to mobilize their latent psychic resources to resolve their problems. The therapist is nondirective, providing encouragement but not guidance, while the individual explores his or her troublesome attitudes and feelings. The problem is solved when appropriate emotional responses are substituted for inappropriate ones, but the decision about what is appropriate is left to the individual. During therapy, the person comes to understand the problem (though not necessarily its origins) and to plan for its resolution.

Person Centered Therapy

Programs that specialize in providing therapeutic interventions that are based on the approach developed by Arnold Lazarus which suggests the basic premise that clients are usually troubled by a multitude of specific problems that should be dealt with by a similar multitude of specific treatments. Multimodal therapy transcends the behavioral tradition by dealing in great depth with sensory, imagery, cognitive and interpersonal factors and their interactive effects. The task of the therapist is to develop the unique set of interventions that is appropriate for each individual based on a multimodal assessment of his or her temperament and personality. Assessments and interventions are structured around the seven modalities which are summarized by the acronym BASIC I.D.: behavior, affect, sensation, imagery, cognition, interpersonal relationships and drugs and biological factors.

Multimodal Therapy

Programs that offer therapist-facilitated collective treatment sessions in which unrelated groups of individuals, couples or families discuss their attitudes, feelings and problems and, with input from other members of the group, attempt to achieve greater self and interpersonal understanding and adjustment and explore solutions to their problems.

Group Counseling

Programs that offer therapeutic sessions that focus on the system of relationships and communication patterns among family members and which attempt to modify those relationships and patterns to achieve greater harmony. The therapist focuses on the family as a unit rather than concentrating on one of the members who is singled out as the person in need of treatment.

Family Counseling

Programs that specialize in providing therapeutic interventions that treat thoughts and cognitions as behaviors which are amenable to behavioral procedures.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Programs that specialize in providing therapeutic interventions that are based on the premise that there is a basic interrelationship and interdependence between intrapsychic conflicts and the social environment in which they occur.  The task of the therapist is to view the client in the context of his or her social environment and to assist the client to examine and deal with his or her intrapsychic conflicts and the impinging environmental factors as they take priority in the course of treatment. The therapist assists the client to gain insight into his or her conflicts and to manipulate the environmental factors that may be contributing to the problem. The vehicle for treatment is a therapeutic personal relationship in which the client's trust in the therapist, the therapist's observations and feelings about the client, and the interaction between the client and therapist lead to a mutual understanding of the nature of the problem and the appropriate methods to use for resolution.

Provides counseling/therapy for adolescents (age 14 and older), adults, and senior citizens for the following disorders:  Major depression and overanxious disorder.  Also provides therapeutic self-help materials and therapist referrals.

Programs that offer therapeutic sessions to help two individuals who are having a problem with their interpersonal relationship identify and resolve their differences and improve their communication. The therapist focuses primarily on their interaction with one another rather than on each person as an individual. Included are couple counseling, sibling counseling, parent/child counseling and other similar groupings.

Conjoint Counseling

Programs that specialize in providing therapeutic interventions that are based on any of the psychological systems that explain behavior in terms of motivational forces at the unconscious level. Therapy focuses on the mental and emotional forces or processes, especially those experienced and developed in early childhood, and their effects on the individual's past and current behavior and mental states.

Psychodynamic Therapy

Organizations that offer self-instructional packages which lead the user through a step-by-step program of exercises or other therapeutic activities with the objective of remediating a specific physical or emotional problem such as stuttering, agoraphobia or post traumatic stress disorder, or to offer targeted support during a crisis, e.g., a panic attack. The materials are designed to be used in the home as an alternative to other forms of treatment or counseling, and may be available in a variety of formats including books or other printed materials, CD or DVD, online streaming or as virtual reality (VR) tools. Remote assistance with monitoring may be available.
