The Public Works Department is responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of all County roads in San Juan County.  In addition to Roads, the Public Works Department maintains the County's buildings and grounds, and operates Solid Waste Transfer Stations on three islands.

Trash/Garbage Pickup

Programs that are responsible for the installation and maintenance of traffic control signs on city streets or other roads within the jurisdiction. Included are regulatory signs (e.g., stop signs, yield signs, speed limit signs, turn and lane use signs, one way signs) which regulate traffic speed and movement; warning signs (e.g., low clearance signs and work zone signs) which warn people about hazards that may be difficult to see; and guidance signs which provide directions to parks, nearby towns, airports, hospitals and other destinations. The signs use colors, shapes, symbols and written messages to help drivers, cyclists and pedestrians read and understand the information.

Traffic Signs

Programs that provide information about available recycling and trash collection/disposal programs, the size and type of materials that can be collected or recycled, the times and places for trash collection or the pick-up or drop-off of recycled material and the future uses of recycled goods.

Waste Management Information

Programs that are responsible for ensuring that streets are appropriately signposted.

Street Signs

Programs that are responsible for developing, inspecting and ensuring that local streets, bridges, tunnels, pedestrian subways, culverts, bicycle paths, retaining walls, curbs, sidewalks, driveways and other public byways are in good repair.

Street Construction/Repair

Programs that are responsible for the installation and maintenance of traffic lights that are positioned at street intersections to indicate when it is safe to drive, ride or walk using a universal color code.

Traffic Signals

Engineering, street maintenance, water and sewer, and sanitation are four of the key areas the department plans and oversees. Regular operations include maintaining the wastewater treatment plant, maintaining sewers and water lines; striping, sweeping and maintaining streets for all weather conditions; maintaining street and traffic signs; and weed removal.

Programs that are responsible for the operation, inspection, maintenance and repair of the pipes, drains and manholes that constitute the sewage collection system which transports liquid waste to treatment facilities. In some jurisdictions, the wastewater from the system of storm drains also runs into the main sewer system.

Sewer System Maintenance

Programs that are responsible for developing, maintaining and operating the system of aqueducts, reservoirs, channels, pipelines, mains, laterals, curb boxes and pumping and purifying equipment by which the community's water supply is obtained, treated, stored and distributed to consumers.

Water Supply System

Maintains the infrastructure of the city by maintaining city streets, collecting and disposing all municipal solid waste/garbage, providing conveyance and treatment of wastewater, managing the stormwater utility, and identifying and implementing capital projects.
