A wide variety of activities and services are provided in conjunction with other state and local agencies.

Garbage and Recycling Drop Off services.

Responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of all county roads in Whatcom County.  In addition to roads, the Public Works Department maintains the county's buildings and grounds.

State hotline and website promotes recycling as an alternative to solid waste disposal. Provides referrals to the nearest recycler in the community.   Includes specific recycling and hazardous substance information on many items, including   -  Electronics -  Yard debris -  Paper -  Glass -  Concrete -  Asphalt -  Scrap metal -  Construction/demolition debris -  Plastics -  Household hazardous waste -  Used oil -  Used appliances -  Paint -  Tires -  Fluorescent bulbs -  Unwanted medications

Offers information and services intended to prevent illness and promote a healthy lifestyle. Assists with the following: On-site sewage disposal, solid waste disposal recycling, subdivision land use, septic tank pumpers, indoor air quality, tobacco prevention, drinking water, hazard identification and consultation, swimming pools, and household hazardous waste.

Provides a curbside bulk collection service available to Solid Waste Management residential customers living in a single family home or duplex. Available by appointment twice a year. Picks up large, unusable household items that are not part of the weekly garbage collection. Also provides an option for commercial pick-up for a nominal fee. A self-haul option is available to those who would rather drop off their load of garbage at the Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center. Accepted items (up to 3 large items): - Appliances, - Barbecues (no propane tanks), - Carpet, - Furniture, - non-working electronics (except computers/monitors/TV's), - power yard equipment (remove oil/gas, no riding mowers), - recreation/exercise equipment, OR up to 15 boxes and bags of smaller household items such as vacuum cleaners, strollers, lawn chairs, clothing and toys. Unaccepted items: - vehicles or vehicle parts, - building equipment (concrete, sheet rock, insulation) - glass or glass-top tables, - hazardous materials/waste, - liquids, - tires or yard waste.
