Provides a neighborhood-oriented approach to emergency preparedness and homeland security. Helps neighborhoods prepare to mutually assist each other in the event of a disaster.

Programs that increase public awareness of the measures that people can take before, during and after an emergency, regardless of the type of hazard encountered, to protect lives and property. Included may be materials that introduce people to the possibility of a disaster in their area, help families prepare and practice a general disaster plan, provide disaster preparedness suggestions for special populations including people with disabilities and older adults, help families plan for the care of their pets in times of disasters and other similar topics.

General Disaster Preparedness Information

Programs that help communities assess their ability to adapt well when confronted with adversity, their capacity to bounce back from a catastrophic health event, an act of terrorism, a natural disaster or other threats that affect the entire community and have the potential to overwhelm local resources. Resilient communities actively prepare for a crisis by anticipating the economic, social, political and environmental changes that may occur and determine in advance how they can draw upon the strengths that made them a healthy community as a means of buffering the impact of an incident and reestablishing stability. A variety of tools are available to support the assessment process. Community resilience assessment can also be used in other contexts including economic, community and neighborhood development.

Community Resilience Assessment Programs

Educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) offered at West Pierce Fire and Rescue Station 20

Organizations that are actively seeking individuals with the requisite skills and experience who are willing to work on a voluntary basis without remuneration in communities that have been devastated by a major fire, flood, hurricane, earthquake, tornado, tsunami, volcanic eruption, landslide, mudslide, snowstorm, drought, famine, explosion or nuclear accident, the outbreak of civil unrest, or other large-scale emergency of natural or human origin that disrupts the community's normal functioning. Volunteers may offer their services prior to an emergency and wait to be called to provide assistance; or may make contact following the emergency if they recognize that their skills are needed.
