Provides research, education, and community development in assessing the needs of health care professionals working in rural and underserved health clinics.

Programs that engage in research which involves the investigation, collection and analysis of scientific, demographic and other data with the objective of advancing knowledge in agriculture and the physical, social and life sciences, enhancing our understanding of the major issues which confront our communities and finding solutions to basic human problems. Included are pure basic research (experimental and theoretical work undertaken to acquire new knowledge without looking for long term benefits other than the advancement of knowledge); strategic basic research (experimental and theoretical work undertaken to acquire new knowledge directed into specified broad areas in the expectation of useful discoveries that many be necessary for the solution of recognized practical problems); applied research (original work undertaken primarily to answer a specific question, determine why something failed or succeeded, solve a specific, pragmatic problem or gain better understanding in a particular area); and developmental research (systematic work, using existing knowledge gained from research or practical experience, that is directed to producing new materials, products or devices; installing new processes, systems and services; or improving substantially those already produced or installed).

Programs that maintain information about community resources that are appropriate for a specific target group or human services sector (for example, youth programs or addiction services) and which link individuals who are in need of specialized services with appropriate resources and/or which provide information about community agencies and organizations that offer specialized services.

A Minnesota State program that bridges the gap between agriculture and education.

Programs that sponsor conferences, symposiums, seminars, workshops and other gatherings in which one or a variety of speakers are brought together to make presentations which address a particular human service topic with the objective of increasing participant awareness of the issues, problems and potential solutions that are facing residents of the community.

Workshops/Symposiums

Programs that provide information, technical assistance and support for farmers who want to implement an integrated system of plant and animal production practices that will meet the basic needs of the current population for food, feed and other fiber products and sustain the economic viability of farming operations while preserving nonrenewable resources and the fertility of farmlands enabling future generations to flourish. Sustainable farming practices include crop rotation; alternative crops and livestock; low input production for local markets; targeted marketing of organically produced meats, vegetables and grains; community-supported agriculture; free range raising of poultry; and nutrient and pest management practices that reduce the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers and rely instead on resistant cultivars, timing of planting, use of compost and mulch, planting of cover crops, biological pest control and other alternatives.

Sustainable Agriculture Programs

Delivers multidisciplinary expertise across academic, research, and extension, providing specialized resources for farmers and food systems contributors by working with communities throughout the state to foster viable farm businesses, optimize sustainable natural resource stewardship, and to promote scaled processing and distribution.

Food Systems offered at WSU Food Systems Program

Provides academic research and programs that support the Washington food system.

College and university programs that offer evening and weekend classes specifically for people in the community who are not enrolled as regular students. Some, but not all of the courses, may allow participants to earn academic credit and many may be identical to those provided in regular academic settings. Included may be short courses, exhibits, telecourses, correspondence programs, seminars and institutes.

College/University Extension Programs

Conducts research and promotes best health and safety practices for Northwest producers and workers in farming, fishing and forestry. Areas of emphasis include new production technologies and the needs of under-served and vulnerable populations.

Conducts research and promotes best safety and health practices for Northwest producers, workers, and communities in farming, fishing, and forestry.

Programs that promote safe and healthy work environments which protect working people from illness and injury and ensure that risks to health and safety in the workplace (such as exposure to toxic chemicals, biological agents, excessive noise or vibration levels, ionizing radiation, mechanical dangers, heat, cold, work-related stress or unsanitary conditions) are identified and assessed, then eliminated or controlled. Activities may include occupational illness and injury surveillance studies; enforcement of laws that establish health and safety standards for the workplace which seek to eliminate or minimize the incidence of employment-related personal illness, injury or death of workers; education programs and consultation services for employers and employees that address overall health and safety issues as well as specific workplace risk factors; and development and implementation of effective on-site workplace health and safety programs which include policies and procedures, instruction and supervision of workers, reporting and investigation of incidents, workplace inspections, and strong management support and worker participation.

Occupational Health and Safety

Creates economic opportunity and support to new businesses, nonprofits, alliances, networks and programs within the community to help build economic prosperity through the advancement of social equity and environmental well-being.

Ecotrust offered at Ecotrust

Provides information and support for social equality and economic opportunity to new businesses and non-profits connected to agriculture, ecology, and the environment.

Programs that preserve and protect endangered land resources from indiscriminate development, destruction or decay and which manage the utilization of renewable and nonrenewable resources to ensure ongoing availability. Included are conservation of forests, rangeland vegetation, deserts, wild and scenic rivers and other wilderness areas and open land spaces; and reestablishment of areas that have been devastated by strip mining or other destructive activities.

Land Conservation

Programs that preserve and protect water resources from indiscriminate losses or waste, improve the efficiency of its use, encourage water-saving practices to reduce costs and slow the depletion of the water supply, and ensure that the supply of quality water is adequate to meet the needs of the public, agriculture and industry.

Water Resources Conservation

Programs, usually provided by members of the business community, that offer technical assistance or other forms of management support for individuals or groups who want to establish or expand the operation of a small business enterprise or venture. Also included are organizations whose purpose is to protect the interests of small businesses and assure that they receive a fair share of government purchases, government contracts, subcontracts and sales of government property.
