Personal Safety Education

Programs that help older adults, people who live alone and other vulnerable individuals become aware of the scams and con games that are most frequently used to induce victims to part with their money or valuables. Common scams include fraudulent prize offers, "free" travel packages that have hidden costs or which never materialize, "get rich quick" investments that turn out to be worthless, tax debt/refund scams, phony charities with names that are similar to well-known organizations and schemes involving promises to recover an individual's money following their victimization by another scam.

Fraud Prevention

Programs, often offered by police departments, that periodically check the residences of people who are on vacation to ensure that nothing has been disturbed. Some programs will, for a small fee, collect mail and newspapers from the property and check all windows and doors on a daily basis.

Vacation Security Checks

Programs that provide professional advice regarding measures that owners or managers of small businesses and other commercial enterprises can take to improve the security of their property, equipment and facilities.

Business Security Evaluations

The county agency that is responsible for enforcing all laws and regulations, preventing crime, investigating criminal activity, apprehending, arresting and detaining suspects, preventing and suppressing delinquency and engaging in other activities that protect lives and property and preserve peace in the community.

Programs that provide professional advice regarding measures that homeowners can take to improve the security of their residential property.

Residential Security Evaluations

Programs that encourage total community involvement in discouraging preventable crime by organizing awareness meetings to help neighbors get to know one another and look out for each other, learn to secure their property, and recognize and report suspicious activity. Technical assistance may also be provided. Included are Park Watch programs that encourage residents to be on the lookout for and report vandalism or other criminal activity in local parks.

Provides technical assistance, training, and funding to local Safe Kids coalitions in the state of Washington. Works to prevent unintentional injuries of children by addressing topics such as traffic safety, bike safety, sports safety, fire safety, fire, burn, and carbon monoxide safety, safe firearm storage, ATV and farm/ranch safety, and medication safety, and poison prevention.

Preventing Injuries to Children offered at Safe Kids Lower Columbia

Safe Kids Washington focuses on childhood safety by working to prevent accidental injuries to children.

Programs that pay for or provide helmets, body armor and pads, gloves, goggles, shoes, hydration systems, bike tools and other equipment and accessories that are needed for mountain biking, road biking, tandem biking and other cycling activities.

Cycling Equipment

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to protect homes, businesses and property from the threat of fire.  Fire prevention programs provide information about faulty wiring and other electrical hazards, kitchen fires, smoking risks, child-related fire safety, flammable materials storage, brush clearance, fire retardant building materials and ground cover, techniques for fighting a fire until the fire agency arrives (first aid firefighting) and other similar topics. Included are programs that inspect the homes of individual citizens and give them a report which recommends ways to protect their property as well as those that deal with fire safety in a more general way.

Fire Prevention Information

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to reduce the risk of injury while engaging in a particular sport or other recreational activity. Topics may include using required safety gear and equipment associated with the sport, ensuring that equipment and playing surfaces are in good condition, warming up and stretching before and during physical exercise, stopping when injured rather than playing through the pain, learning the safe way to practice particular plays (e.g., sliding in baseball), understanding the special vulnerabilities of younger players, ensuring the availability of first aid, and emphasizing the fun associated with the sport rather than the importance of winning.

Sports Safety Education

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to protect children from preventable injuries and fatalities sustained in and around automobiles. Included are programs that provide information about laws which relate to the use of child passenger safety seats to restrain infants and young children who are riding as passengers in motor vehicles, which stress the importance of child passenger safety measures and/or which make available information about the relative merits of different types of child passenger safety seats; and those that address safety issues such as heat stroke, hypothermia, carbon monoxide poisoning, runaway vehicles, carjacking/abduction, trunk entrapment, self-release from car seat and other problems that may occur when young children are left unattended in a vehicle.

Child Passenger Safety Education

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to ensure their safety while riding bicycles. Bicycle safety programs provide information about traffic laws as they apply to bicyclists and warnings regarding the types of violations and other riding behaviors that most frequently result in accidents. Also included are programs that address the specific needs of people who use their bicycles to commute to work, ride to school or get to other destinations.
