Fall Prevention
Educators visit homes to do a safety survey. They provide education on the reasons why falls happen and give ideas on how to reduce injuries at home. They can also install risk reduction devices.

Community Affairs offered by South King Fire & Rescue's Station 62 & Headquarters

Distributes free smoke detectors and CO alarms to low income senior citizens or families who live within the fire jurisdiction. Installs detectors and batteries if needed. Helps seniors reduce their risk of falling.

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the risk factors associated with trips, slips and falls by older adults and others in and around their homes and the measures that can be taken prevent their occurrence. Delivery formats may include fact sheets, safety check lists or other informational materials; individual or group educational sessions which may include strength and balance exercises; and general media campaigns. The programs may address illnesses and other physical conditions that affect mobility and balance; "high-risk" medications or medication combinations that may cause drowsiness; lack or improper use of needed mobility aids; proper versus improper footwear; environmental safety hazards such as unsafe or unlighted stairways, uneven or slippery walking surfaces, obstacles such as throw rugs and exposed cords or wires, unsteady furniture or lack of grab bars and handrails; and other similar factors.

Fall Prevention Programs

Programs that pay for or provide carbon monoxide detection devices which can be installed in homes and apartments, especially in areas close to sleeping quarters. The devices may run on household current or batteries and sound an alarm when concentrated amounts of carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless, tasteless and toxic gas produced as a by-product of combustion, come into contact with the detector. Likely sources of carbon monoxide include fuel furnaces, gas water heaters, fireplaces, woodstoves, unvented kerosene and gas space heaters, gas dryers, charcoal grills, yard maintenance equipment and exhaust from automobile or other vehicles in attached garages.

Programs that pay for or provide smoke detection devices which can be installed in homes, apartments or commercial buildings and which sound an alarm when fire breaks out and smoke comes into contact with the device.

Smoke Alarms

Provides and installs free smoke detectors to qualified individuals.   
Washington state requires carbon monoxide detectors in all existing residences, including apartments, condos, hotels, dormitories and residential institutions.

Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detectors offered by Seattle Fire Department at Headquarters

Provides and installs carbon monoxide and smoke alarms free for city of Seattle homeowners who identify as a senior, low-income or have a disability. This program offers includes strobe alarms for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Provides free minor home repairs to lower income Renton Homeowners such as electrical, plumbing, minor roof leaks, furnace, and ADA items as well as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. 
Program emphasis is for health and safety repairs of the home.  

Housing Repair Assistance Program offered by City of Renton

Offers minor home repair, and referrals for home improvement loans; serves low-income city of Renton residents.

Programs that provide assistance in the form of labor and supplies for people with disabilities who need to modify their home environments to make them accessible and which evaluate the situation on a case-by-case basis rather than having pre-established policies regarding the type of modification they are able to accommodate.

Undesignated Home Barrier Removal Services

Programs that provide assistance in the form of labor and supplies for people with disabilities who need to modify multilevel homes or homes that have entrances preceded by steps in order to make them accessible by installing sloping walkways which transcend the levels.

Ramp Construction Services

Programs that provide assistance in the form of labor and supplies for people who need to make major repairs to their homes or upgrade/replace entire systems to eliminate health and safety hazards (such as gas leaks, outdated or hazardous electrical wiring and plumbing) or to improve their security e.g., by installing fences or fixing/replacing broken doors or windows. Typical services include major roofing repair and/or replacement; electrical and plumbing upgrades or repairs; septic system improvements; heating and air conditioning system repairs; flooring, tile or wall repairs; and interior and exterior painting that is part of the home rehabilitation process. Most programs do not handle minor repairs. Age, income, disability, need or other eligibility requirements may apply.

Home Rehabilitation Services

Programs that provide loans for income-eligible people who want to repair or modify their homes or mobile homes to make them energy-efficient, attractive, safe and free of health hazards; or which help eligible individuals find loans for this purpose. Most loan programs cover major repairs, system upgrades and replacements (e.g., plumbing, heating or electrical systems) but not minor repairs. Included are conventional home rehabilitation loans, deferred loans (in which payments are deferred until the home is sold) and forgivable loans (in which all or a part of the loan is forgiven if the borrower resides in the home for a specified period of time). The forgiven part of a forgivable loan amounts to a contingent grant. If the borrower sells the home prior to the specified time period, all or part of the loan is due. A common variation is to have portions of the loan forgiven gradually over a period of years.

Home Rehabilitation Loans

Programs that provide a variety of minor home repair services for homeowners who qualify. Specific services vary by organization but include such things as fixing leaky pipes and faucets; clearing clogged drains; replacing broken switches, sockets and electrical fixtures; changing light bulbs; fixing or replacing door locks and handles; replacing broken screen doors or window panes; installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and changing batteries; making minor repairs on stair treads; replacing carpet threshold strips; and replacing furnace filters.
