Veterans Assistance Fund offered at Benton County Department of Human Services
Assists Benton and Franklin County veterans, their families, and the families of deceased veterans. Offers utility assistance, rental/mortgage assistance, up to one week in a motel for homeless veterans, bus passes, food vouchers, and dental assistance.
Provides assistance for Benton and Franklin County Veterans, their families, and the families of deceased Veterans who meet the eligibility criteria for assistance. Community referrals to partner agencies for housing, case management services, VA claims and other services are given when needed. Services may include: utility assistance, rental/mortgage assistance, application fee/background checks for housing or pre-employment, up to 1 week in a motel for homeless veterans, bus passes, food vouchers, burial expenses (up to $1,000), necessary safety equipment required by employer to gain employment, dental assistance (up to $2,000), and childcare assistance.

- Move-in Assistance & Homeless Prevention: provides rent assistance for those who are 3 months behind. Assists with move-in costs, such as deposit and first month rent.
- Coordinated Entry for homeless individuals and families seeking housing solutions.
- Homeless Resource Center: staff work closely with clients who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless to help with safe shelter, transportation, household items and hygiene items. Sometimes rental or utility assistance and many other services that are needed will be provided. Clients are screened for eligibility.
- Transitional and Permanent Supportive Housing: Manages several housing units and works with many landlords in Yakima County to provide housing for individuals and families.
- Street Outreach: Outreach team (nurses, behavioral health specialists, outreach, and housing specialists) visit local shelters and other places where homeless might be, hoping to engage individuals and offer services.
- Helps with motel vouchers when funding permits.

Works to reduce and prevent homelessness for youth and young adults by providing stable housing, education and employment support, behavioral health services, and basic needs assistance.
- Stable Housing: Provides immediate access to low-barrier shelter, rental assistance, eviction prevention, rental deposit, motel vouchers, etc. to create a sustainable solution and avert cycles of recurring homelessness.
- Family Reconciliation: Diverting youth from the homeless system back to family and natural supports whenever possible.
- Permanent Connections: Includes engaging youth in family, school, and community connection activities.
- Education & Employment Support: Supports education and employment goals by covering education and employment related costs. Expenses associated with enrolling and attending school may include GED tests, school IDs, school supplies, college applications, or placement test fees. Expenses associated with obtaining or maintaining employment may include interview clothing, work uniforms/shoes, licensing or certification costs, state ID, haircuts, or other costs that contribute to employment.
- Support for Improved Social & Emotional Well-being: Crisis services, such as referrals and connections to health and behavioral health care services, engaging youth in community and familial activities, and encouraging connections to cultural, community, and trust-worthy adults.
- May also provide items necessary to help an emergent need, such as: food, water, clothing, hygiene products, first aid, baby formula, diapers, medical prescriptions, winter gear, tents, sleeping bags, etc.
All services are subject to approval per program guidelines.

Permanent Supportive Housing; Pairs permanent, income-based rental subsidies with long-term case management to create a comprehensively supportive housing program. Case management is required for the length of time that the client is their unit. Provides 70 designated PSH apartment units for families with children, in partnership with the Bellingham Housing Authority.
Emergency Hotel Stays; Offers emergency motel stays to vulnerable families with young children. This is an expensive option for emergency shelter, but it has been necessary as there is not enough emergency shelter for families currently available in Whatcom County.
