San Juan County Superior Court handles felony cases and civil suits over $100,000.

Deals with criminal and civil cases, including: crimes against persons, property crimes, divorce juvenile crimes, probate of estates, personal injury actions, adoption, mental illness, matters of domestic violence, dependencies, and other civil actions.

Hears misdemeanor criminal cases, civil cases where damages amount to less than $50,000, small claims, traffic cases, and requests for domestic violence protection orders.

Manages a court of limited jurisdiction involving misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor actions committed in violation of State/County statues or County/Municipal ordinances. All matters involving traffic including traffic and parking infractions, Temporary Orders for protection from domestic violence, Civil actions involving $50,000 or less and Small Claims up to $4000. This Court also handles preliminary appearances on 72 hour holds for felony charges. Has jurisdiction over misdemeanors, gross misdemeanors and criminal traffic violations for which the maximum fine is $5,000 and/or 364 days in jail.  Preliminary hearings for felony cases are also within the jurisdiction of the court.  Examples of misdemeanors are disorderly conduct, shoplifting and prostitution.  Gross misdemeanors include theft of property or services valued up to $250, driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or other drugs, and hit-and-run.  The trial in a criminal action may be heard before either a judge or a jury.

Civil jurisdiction is concurrent with Superior Court and extends to cases in which the amount in controversy does not exceed $100,000, exclusive of interest and costs. The District Court does not have jurisdiction in cases involving the title to real estate and certain other limited exceptions.

The court hears misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor criminal offenses, civil and traffic infractions, some civil lawsuits, protection orders, name changes, and performs marriage ceremonies. Criminal misdemeanor cases carry a maximum penalty of up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Criminal gross misdemeanor cases carry a maximum penalty of up to 1 year in jail and a $5,000 fine. Some examples of criminal cases heard by the court are: DUI, Domestic Violence Assault, and Driving While Suspended. Civil cases including both: General civil actions with damage claims in the maximum amount of $100,000. Small claims actions with money claims in the maximum amount of $5,000-$10,000. The small claims court may ONLY grant judgment for monetary damages. The court may not order the other party to return property or do any action except the payment of money. Infractions include traffic and code violations.

State trial courts that handle infractions punishable by a fine; misdemeanor cases such as petty theft, prostitution, intoxication and vandalism punishable by a fine with a maximum level (usually $1000) and maximum amount of time in county jail (usually a year or less); and felony cases such as murder, possession of dangerous drugs for sale, robbery and rape that are punishable by a state prison term.

A state trial court of general jurisdiction situated in Lewis County. This court has state-wide jurisdiction and hears major criminal matters (felonies), civil cases including cases involving real property, domestic relations matters, appeals from lower courts (Lewis County District and Municipal Courts), and appeals from state administrative agencies. Also has jurisdiction in adoption, probate and competency cases. Operated by three full-time elected judges who sit on all matters and one Superior Court Commissioner who hears family law, dependency, domestic violence and juvenile cases.

The Olympia Municipal Court is a court of limited jurisdiction. Presides over the following types of cases: - non-traffic infractions, - traffic infractions, - criminal misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors, - and orders for protection for victims of domestic violence. Schedules arraignments, pre-trial hearings, non-jury and jury trials, sentencing, reviews, etc. Coordinates related services including legal representation for indigent persons, probation, and interpreter services. Citations issued by the City of Olympia Police Department, Code Enforcement Officer, or Animal Services for a misdemeanor or gross misdemeanor criminal offense, traffic infraction or code violation that occurred in the city limits, tickets will be filed in the Olympia Municipal Court.

Provides services related to civil traffic infractions and all infraction-criminal misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor incidents.  Schedules arraignments, pre-trial hearings, non-jury and jury trials, sentencing, etc.  Provides related services, including legal representation for indigent persons, probation supervision and public defense screener services.

Conducts criminal cases involving misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors, preliminary hearings in felony cases, traffic infraction cases, civil cases in which the amount in controversy does not exceed fifty thousand dollars, small claim controversy (up to four thousand dollars), civil protection orders, name changes, and vehicle impound cases.

Serves as the official record keeper for the Superior Court. Employees of the Clerk's office are prohibited by law from giving legal advice. Provides trial information, legal forms, instructions on court procedures, passport applications and photos, jury duty information, DV resources, and the Kitsap County Jail inmate roster Assists with filing for no contact and orders orders of protection.

Court of limited jurisdiction and provides exclusive original jurisdiction over alleged violations of all City of Chehalis ordinances and some state statutes. These charges may include non-traffic infractions, traffic infractions, criminal misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors. The court is responsible for collecting all fines and penalties arising from these violations, and processes and maintains all court related documents. The municipal court schedules all hearings and supervises related services including indigent defense, probation services, electronic home monitoring, and community service.
